Sleep is necessary for a person’s body to work properly, mature, and heal after being injured. The majority of researchers find that adults need between six and eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep apnea can cause narcolepsy, a different sleep problem. At times, however, individuals who do not suffer from sleep apnea experience narcolepsy. Persons who experience this problem usually go to sleep suddenly and without warning in whatever location they happen to be. If a person suffers from this problem, the physician often requires that individual to refrain from driving before the condition is being treated effectively; sleeping while driving can be very dangerous!
One other potentially harmful sleep disturbance is known as sleepwalking, but is sometimes described referred to in medical literature as somnambulism. Persons who walk in their sleep do the identical behaviors – eating, taking a shower, climbing stairs, and so on - that they do while they are awake. Up to 20 percent of the population worldwide may walk in their sleep.
Sometimes, people have often documented cases of people who have left their homes or committed murder during a sleepwalking episode! Most of the time, however, the individual who is sleeping is in much more peril than those around him or her. The recommended strategy is to get the sleepwalker to return to bed.
Another problem known as shift work sleep disorder is common to individuals whose work schedule involves rotating shifts, afternoon, or night shifts. This difficulty can result in either of two forms of sleep problems: excessive sleepiness, or an inability to sleep. Moreover, persons who suffer from this problem face a higher possibility of cancer than persons who do not have it.
Individuals treated for insomnia usually have difficulty going to sleep at night. If they are able to go to sleep, they frequently fail to sleep deeply and awaken easily. They may only sleep several hours before experiencing this disturbance.
The effects of this sleeping problem include sleepiness and decreased physical coordination. Although individuals who suffer from insomnia frequently suffer from sleepiness, however, those who suffer from chronic insomnia find themselves to be constantly overly alert, and find it difficult to relax or remain calm. Additional possible side effects of this condition include physical and emotional fatigue.
