Greetings my friend,

You'll be pleased to know that I was able to post 5 new articles for you this week.  I'm running a bit late with today's editorial, but I think we'll be just fine, as we get back on track with a regular publishing schedule.

A couple of months ago, I posted an article about how I built a mailing list of 1800 in less than 2 weeks.  With the recent BWE giveaway event, I came close to duplicating that, with over 1400 people signing up to participate in the event in just 2 weeks.  It goes to show that those of us who do business online can quickly build a mailing list when we offer something of value that is of interest to our audience.  What's interesting is that I didn't have any help from those with HUGE mailing lists.  If an affiliate with 50,000 subscribers or more had mailed out, my new list would have grown a lot bigger.

Although the subscriber count was less this time, the process was much more profitable.  There are several reasons for this.  Mostly, though, it was because instead of just giving download links for the audios, I set up flash players for people to listen to the audios right on the website and did NOT offer download links, but directed them to purchase the package if they wanted to download the MP3s.

Actually, I made more than enough during that event to pay for the upgraded commercial license for the BWE software I'm now using - Mind WorkStation.

There are several key lessons that may be gleaned from this experience.

First, growing a mailing list can be easy when you make the right offer.  There's a LOT of interest in BrainWave Entrainment, and giving folks an opportunity to try it out for free is just too good for many folks to pass up.  Of course, what YOU offer your website visitors should be something YOUR market will find interesting and compelling.

Second, you can make money while doing a free event.  The core principle for doing this is to limit what people get for free (while still making it valuable in and of itself), and make it clear how much more they can get with your paid product.  One of the mistakes I made last year when I converted the PowerKeys Publishing website to a membership format was that I gave away TOO MUCH stuff, and this distracted folks from what I was offering as paid packages.  (This is one of the reasons the Research Library is now available here at the www.PragmaticSolutionsNow.com website for those who log in as a member.)

And third, sometimes it's smart to spend money in order to make money.  Many of us have heard that you can make money online without having to spend anything, or at least not having to spend much, and while that's true, spending $1,000 to $10,000 is still peanuts compared to what it costs to run a business in the "real world".  Most smart business people base their decisions about what to purchase on a single question - "How quickly will it pay for itself?"

If you base all of your business decisions on this one question, you can reach higher levels of success and profitability quicker than you might imagine.  It's a much more powerful question than "how can I do this as cheaply as I can?"  It's even more powerful than "how can I charge more money for what I sell?"

Look at it this way.  If you KNEW that spending $1,000 in advertising would bring you even $100 in profit, how much would you spend on that particular form of advertising?  As much as you could, right?  If $1,000 expenditure brings you $100 in income, then a $1,000,000 expenditure would bring you $100,000.  If I had ready access to that much cash, I'd do it every month, wouldn't you?

By the same token, if you KNEW that buying a resale license for a particular product would allow you to make enough sales to recover your costs in the first month, then it certainly makes sense to go for it.  Essentially, this is what I did by buying a commercial license to the MindWorkStation software.  I was buying the rights to sell copies of the BWE audios produced by the software.

In some cases, you really don't know whether a particular expenditure will be profitable or not.  For instance, you may wonder if spending $1000 to have a website like SelfGrowth.com send a solo mailing to their subscribers will result in enough sales to cover the ad cost.  Whenever you test a new ad, or test a proven ad to a new list, you're essentially gambling, and you have to limit your risk as much as possible.

But that's a subject for another time.

Two days ago, I announced that I had opened up 100 spots in a new test group.  This test group will be working with a new set of recordings being developed for a NEW Entrainment Package.  When it's complete, the new package should sell for $495.  As of right now, 22 spots have been taken and only 78 spots remain available.
